Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. As a young girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessional disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word"association. Ford was first fascinated by acting as a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she wasn't a good fit there. Ford was then able to apply for a place for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. She worked on stage regularly and was a member of the company's 2000-2001 season. Tate was first noticed for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
